Isn't this like an evergreen Korean love song?  There are countless versions but this version is one that might just capture your heartstrings from the sweet voice and the music arrangement that uses a mix of harp and strong beat. ^^

Summer Dessert - Patbingsu

image

I am wondering if I can find Patbingsu anywhere else in Singapore other than at Seoul Yummy.... Since this is a summer dessert and Singapore is in summer all year round, this should be popular here.  The only thing is that there will be a head-on competition against our local dessert ice kacang.

The delicious serving of red bean on top of the shaved ice looks so good.  The 2 white square pieces should be some glutinous cake.

image

I had this bingsu while travelling in Jeonju last year.  I appreciate the efforts they put in to present a nice bowl of dessert.

Wished I am back there now ~

[Travel /Jeju] International and Domestic Flight Options to Jeju

Recently, a friend asked about flights to Jeju. Jeju Airport is in fact an international airport and as such you need not necessary fly into Jeju from Gimpo (Seoul) or Busan or other domestic destinations.  And just for info, there is only 1 airport in Jeju.
These are the Korea-operated flights which I know that lands at the Jeju Airport.

1. Korean Air
2. Asiana Airlines
3. Jeju Air
4. Jin Air (a subsidiary of Korean Air)
5. T'way Airline
6. Air Busan

image

There are also other international flights that land at the Jeju such as:

1.  China Eastern Airlines (From China, Shanghai)
2.  Dragonair (from Hong Kong)
3.  TransAsia (from Taiwan)

Unfortunately, there is still no direct flights from Singapore to Jeju. These are the options for Singaporeans wanting to travel to Jeju:

 1. Fly to Incheon International Airport, take the A'rex train that connects Incheon Airport to Gimpo Airport.  Take a domestic flight to Jeju from Gimpo Airport.

 2. Transfer to Jeju from nearer countries such as Bangkok (Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way Airline), Philippines (Air Busan, Jeju Air, Jin Air), Hong Kong (Jeju Air) or Taiwan (Air Busan, T'way Airline).  This way, you shorten the travel distance by avoiding going all the way up to Seoul, which is located at the northern part of South Korea, and then travel down to the southern tip of South Korea.  However, this option is feasible if you plan to depart from Jeju at the end of your trip.

 3.  If you are in Busan or Cheongju, you can easily book a domestic flight via Jeju Air or Air Busan to Jeju.  If you are in the bigger cities such as Daegu, Gwangju, Jinju, Pohang, Ulsan or Yeosu, take the Asiana Airlines or Korean Air.  If you are in Gunsan or, Wonju, take the Korean Air while you are in Muan, Asiana Airline would be your only choice.

There are many options available.  Have fun exploring!  Enjoy Jeju!

Article: Korea's best walking trails

" Gyeongju Bulguksa Temple Road: Gyeongju, often referred to as the “roofless museum” of Korea and a capital of the Silla Kingdom (B.C. 57-935) offers a great walk surrounded by historical landmarks such as Bulkuksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto and other historic sites throughout the ancient city. According to UNESCO, the historic area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a “concentration of outstanding examples of Korean Buddhist art, in the form of sculptures, relics, pagodas and the remains of temples and palaces.” "

[Drama] April 2013 Favourite Drama - Queen of Ambition / Yawang 야왕

image

Seriously, this drama should bag at least a couple of awards at this year's SBS Award Event.  Both leads, Kwon Sang Woo and Soo Ae exceeded expections to bring the drama to climax towards the last few episodes with the suspense that was already created at episode 1.  The suspense lasted over months and was finally revealed at the end.  The big question was "Who Died?".  It was not even obviously clear until episode 24.  Was it for real or was it an illusion?

The last big hit for Kwon Sang Woo was probably Stairways to Heaven about a decade ago.  Having been on and off the screen,  the roles he had after Stairways did not manage to cast a deep inpression in the hearts of the viewers. Something which I notice about him in this show was that he exuded a sense of fatherly love for the super adorable daughter.

Soo Ae managed to capture the attention of the audience through her greedy, selfish and evil role portrayal in this drama.  Kudos to the script writer, she probably gets a few hate mails after each episode.

image

Screen capture for a scene that linked the first and last episode for this drama.

Overall, this is a drama not to be missed this year!!

[Music] April 2013 Favourite OST - That Winter, The Wind Blows (그 겨울 바람이 분다)

image

It is alright even if you have started watching the drama or just half way through it, the songs in this OST is captivating on their own even without the visual effect.   The OST has only 9 songs,  of which, half are instrumental versions of the song.  The top hits are Winter Love sung by The One, And One sung by Taeyeon of SNSD.... having said so, the other songs including Grey Paper sung by Yesung of Super Junior, Snow Flower by Gummy and Tears Fallin by Kim Boa of Spica are just as melodious to fit into the melodrama.

The ost has been running on my mp3 for weeks now... and I am glad to have it as my companion 24/7.

During my recent trip to Korea, I had the opportunity to know this seasonal vegetable, ssuk or mugwort.  It has a pretty strong herb taste and would say that it has an acquired taste. Foreigners might not get used to the taste easily but the Koreans seem to love it!  What I had tried was the mugwort sticky rice cake as well as mugwort fried pancake.  The vegetable is a little tough and would need some chewing.  Apparently, the locals would go hiking and pluck the vegatables back for cooking.   Otherwise, it is also readily available at the traditional market or supermarket.

This is one place that I know, that regardless of season, the scenery stays picturesque.  During autumn, maples leaves are found on many of its trees and during spring, the light pink spring flowers signifies the start of new year and new energy to the entire campus.

Best inflight cookie on Cathay Pacific

image

I have travelled on many flights but this is the first time that I was served such delicious macadamia nut butter shortbread en route my flight back from Seoul.  So much so that I bucked up my courage to ask for extra pieces.   Unfortunately, the flight has only prepared enough for 1 piece per passenger.  In my second attempt in checking out for extra cookies. ..  I asked the stewardess again while going to the lavatory.  The helpful stewardess managed to find 1 piece while collecting the meal tray.

I did the same 바보 thing on my transit flight.  Eventually, I managed to collect 2 pieces to being back home ^^

Remember. .. do not discard this cookie if you are taking cathay pacific flight. ..

[Seoul] 9th Hangang Yeouido Spring Flower Festival 2013 ( 봄꽃제)

The Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival has started.  It covers a huge area from Yeouido Park and all the way until Hangang Park. If you are taking the subway, alight at Yeouido Station and use exit 3. You will hit IFC mall. Exit the mall, walk along the pathway, pass by Coffee Bean and keep going. You will see Big Yeouido Park 여의도공원. Enter the park and walk towards the northwest direction. At the end of the park, you will see 2 rows of cherry blossom trees lining along the road. Enjoy the walk.

The festival started  recently and will go on until 21 April. Lots of locals, including office workers visiting the park during their lunch hour, bikers and tourists.

It is a carnival event with tentages set up along the way.  The are also performances everyday until 21 April.   That includes stage performances and band performances near the Han river.  It is certainly a good time to pack your picnic basket and enjoy some sandwiches and beer, maybe.

Weather is rather comfortable today around 15 to 18 degrees.  No need for thick clothings.   Enjoy the sun, the flowers, the river and the company of your loved ones at the festival.   Life is good ^*

드라마 - 야왕

image

Who is watching 야왕 ? This is one of the best drama I have watched after 착한남자. The storyline for 야왕 is full of suspense. You simply cannot anticipate what is going to happen to 하료 and 주다해. It is a tug of war between the 2 leads.... one moment he seems to be on the upper hand while the next moment, he is sabotaged by some unexpected events.

I shall not reveal the entire storyline but I guess snippets the drama shall be fine. In the scene above, 수정 misses 재웅 dearly...she returned to the school library and found the book she had scribbled her love message to 재웅. Will love develop between her and 하료?

기대해요 ~~~

Homemade 부대찌개

image

Cooking 부대찌개 isn't as complicated as I thought. In fact, the dish can be ready within 30 mins. Cut the beancurd into 6 pieces. Thaw the sausages. Get ready a can of baked beans. Prepare a slice of cheese if you like the soup to have some cheesy taste. Spam can also be added. Korean restaurants would also add ddokpokki (떡볶이) and mandu (만두). Add that if you have the ingredients. I bought premixed 부대찌개 sauce and 김치.Add about 300ml of water into the pot.Add all the ingredients. When the sausage is almost cooked, add in 라면. Cook for another 5 mins and you have a pot of 부대찌개! That's how easy it can be....해보세요 ^^
